When you are not wearing your gorgeous bling, keep it protected from tarnish by storing it. It can be as simple as a small bag, like the ones I sell below made from anti-tarnish flannel.
Of course, another great option is a gorgeous jewelry box.
Anti- tarnish tabs, available below, that you can place in your jewelry box or container. These anti-tarnish tabs will protect your precious investment.
Sterling silver naturally tarnishes. Even argentium silver will over time, although it is slower to tarnish. The cause of tarnish is simply air (specifically the sulfur in the air); as well as moisture, lotion, hairspray...
2. Don't expose your bling to harsh chemicals.
Bleach and cleaning chemicals actually eat the metal. They leave pits and will weaken prongs. And that could be disastrous, potentially causing your stones to fall out.
ALSO, one of the worst things to tarnish silver is anti-bacterial soap. Just don't use it. Besides that is just not good for you (you can do a simple google search to see why), what it does to silver is unsightly. It turns it brownish/black and it nearly impossible to get off. The same thing happens when you expose bleach to silver.
No amount of home remedy polishing will get your silver to shine after being washed with bleach or anti bacterial soap.
In fact the best way I've found to get rid of that discoloring is heat it up with my torch and burn it off. Then I put it in an acid bath to finish cleaning it. I then gie it a new professional polish.
Please don't try anything like torching you jewelry this at home. Stones need to be removed to heat up silver. Leave it to the professionals and send your piece back to me if you have this issue.
Most importantly, just take off your rings when you are doing chores, housework, or washing your hands.
3. Proper tarnish removal is easy.
You don’t need anything fancy to clean your jewelry. (Unless you have exposed your jewelry to any of the above issues.)
What do I recommend? A simple mixture of baking soda and lemon juice. Gently rub it on with a soft tooth brush or cloth to remove tarnish.
Toothpaste is also very effective. Not the gel type, just the paste.
Commercial jewelry dips can have harsh chemicals and are not good for your precious gold and silver jewelry. As well, they will leave pits.
